I am a woman obsessed with flowers. I have loved flowers my entire life. When I go out traveling I photograph flowers and when I am at dinner parties and events I marvel at the centerpieces of exquisite flowers. In fact, when I first moved to Manhattan, I lived blocks away from the flower district and would walk the block to admire the variety and beauty of their stems and petals. During the pandemic I spent months indoors. With each grocery run I would purchase fresh flowers and bring nature indoors. I find that flowers brighten the room and they brighten every room. Not only do I love to receive flowers, I am happy to give them and I am not alone! 63% of women buy flowers for themselves. 86% of these floral purchase are for non-calendar occasions. 79% of total floral purchases are made by women.

As much as I love a beautifully arranged bunch of flowers I love a beautifully arranged song. In and in 2023 Miley Cyrus released a new spinster anthem called, “Flowers.” While the lyrics have deep significance for Miley, the earworm beat and lyrics are catchy and empowering. Historically, women have waited to be doted on and gifted flowers. Today the modern gals are basking in self love and buying their own flowers!
“I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can.” MILEY CYRUS, FLOWERS
Buying yourself flowers can be a beneficial part of your positive mental health journey and self-care routine for a variety of reasons. Because flowers are typically viewed as a gift only given to another person, many people have struggled with the idea of buying them for themselves. Research shows flowers consistently help to heighten the mood and help you feel more empowered when making a self purchase.

A team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants’ behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups. Flowers were found to have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
“Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy,” said Dr. Haviland-Jones. “Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have strong positive effects on our emotional well being.”
One of my favorite tales of positive floral reinforcement was on my favorite daytime tv show. In 2008, Oprah was interviewing Kirstie Alley, the episode where Nate Berkus renovates Kirstie Alley’s kitchen. She share a very specific and unforgettable reason for why she buys herself flowers.
"I used to be a coke head. When I kicked my habit, I vowed to spend the same [money] weekly on flowers that I'd spent on drugs.” I buy & arrange my own flowers as a gift to myself."
